In the 12th century, after his return from the Holy Land (around 1173), the Count of Vaudémont is said to have promoted a Templar settlement on the territory of Rugney, who

immediately built the chapel.The Abbess of Bouxières gave the Templars permission to build a canal to bring water from the Moselle to their mill.When the Templar Order was dissolved in 1312, the Commandery came under the control of the Hospitallers, the Order of Saint John.
